Swans

November 2015  |  5" x 7" each  |  Watercolor and pencil on cold-pressed watercolor paper

A pair of works entitled "Swans," created for TWICE, Ang Ilustrador ng Kabataan's annual exhibit for 2015, which ran from December 5 to 28, 2015 at Galerie Stephanie.

Agatha

June 2015  |  4" x 6"  |  Watercolor on Fabriano Artistico Extra White 300gsm cold-pressed watercolor paper

One of two postcard-size artworks which I contributed to Ang Ilustrador ng Kabataan's Paper Clips exhibit which showed in 2015 at Prism Gallery. This is a tribute to Agatha, Wes Anderson's heroine from his film, The Grand Budapest Hotel.

Denise Veronica

Denise Veronica

June 2014  |  8.5" x 11"  |  Watercolor on Canson watercolor paper

For her upcoming 18th birthday, Denise commissioned a watercolor portrait that would be part of her debut party invitations. The event would be mostly pink and peach-themed, and feature pink roses as one of the event's main decorative elements.

Fiona Katlyn

Fiona Katlyn

April 2013  |  12" x 16"  |  Watercolor and pencil on cold-pressed watercolor paper

For Fiona's upcoming first birthday, mom Sarah commissioned a portrait of her beautiful baby daughter, in a ballet-inspired theme. The artwork is referenced from an actual photo, but I took liberties with the colors, flowers, and Fiona's dress.

Vanity cat

Vanity cat

November 2012  |  5.5" x 8.5"  |  Watercolor on cold-pressed watercolor paper

This pretty lady of a cat was referenced from an actual cat, perched at a living room window ledge, during my trip to Amsterdam in 2012. I created this notecard design for a paper goods feature in Elle Decoration Philippines' February 2013 issue. I also used this artwork for my entry in the 2013 Ang Ilustrador ng Kabataan (Ang INK) catalog.

Emily

Emily

July 2011  |  9" x 12"  |  Watercolor and pencil on cold-pressed watercolor paper

If she resembles someone you know, that’s probably ’cause she’s your typical, next-door Asian girl. Chinese, Japanese, Korean… Yeah, she’s a little of everything–except she doesn’t really exist in real life.

I have a long way to go when it comes to figure drawing, paint layering, and applying shadows. Though I can say I’ve found my style, I also want to experiment further and see where it takes me. So I’m a bit surprised by how this turned out–Asian women aren’t my usual subjects, and even the warmer palette is something I’ve tried for the first time here.

So where exactly did she come from? Flipping through an issue of Vogue Girl Korea, I chanced upon this absolutely dreamy fashion editorial featuring a girly-girl with frothy pink hair, and I knew I wanted to paint her.

Carey Mulligan

Carey Mulligan

February 2011  |  5" x 8"  |  Watercolor and pencil on Moleskine watercolor paper

Carey Mulligan is one of my pixie heroes–those who sport a pixie cut so well, the thought of getting a haircut consumes me.

She wasn’t wearing this blush dress in a previous Elle UK magazine cover story. But I decided to dress her in such, because of the one thing I’ve been pining for since I saw it during one Hong Kong trip–a dreamy, sumptuous, ever-so-subtly-pastel pink, Peter Pan collared trench coat, which I saw on the racks in Miu Miu. It was love.

I'm always in the habit of drawing what I love, and especially what I knew I couldn’t have. You could say that drawing kept me dreaming.

Sasha Pivovarova

Sasha Pivovarova

May 2011  |  9" x 12"  |  Watercolor and pencil on cold-pressed watercolor paper

I’ve always wanted to do a portrait of Russian model Sasha Pivovarova, because of how young and innocent she looks, and how she stands out in the sea of anonymous-looking models. (Plus, I discovered she’s an artist/illustrator herself! How cool is that?) I was surprised this piece took a slightly haunting, gothic turn. It still has that romantic feel, but with a dark side.
