Rêverie

Two of 10 watercolor paintings (measuring 16" x 22" each) that were part of my 2011 solo exhibit entitled, "Rêverie: Illustrations of the Sweet Life." (Left: "Ribbons & Roses"  /  Right: "Blush & Bloom")

Like strange fruit under the willow

Like strange fruit under the willow

Few runway shows leave a lasting impression on me, and fewer designers make my heart go a-flutter. But while I’ve always loved Lanvin, their Fall 2011 collection really took my breath away. The feel was very gothic, peppered with preacher/pilgrim references, transitioning later into expert drapes and jewel tones. The end of the show was the perfect, hauntingly beautiful summary–a parade of models, arranged from darkness to lightness of dress, like a wave of ultra-chic zombies. To quote Style.com‘s Tim Blanks, “They gathered like strange, exotic fruit under the willow.”

The Pink Swan x Repetto

The Pink Swan x Repetto

In March 2012, one of the best things that happened to me was getting into the local children’s illustrator group Ang Ilustrador ng Kabataan (Ang INK). When INK asked us members to each come up with a page for the annual catalog, I decided to make something new, yet something I was comfortable with. With the very little experience I have with children’s illustration, I’ve realized that having a younger audience in mind helps you think of yourself in smaller shoes, to fantasize about the things that could have been. Ballet, for one. As a kid, I somehow couldn’t see myself in tights and a tutu, and yet today I am amazed by the dance, the dresses, the grace, and art of it.

I got the biggest inspiration from a trip to the mall–where, at the then-newly opened Repetto shop in Greenbelt 3, I was greeted by this frothy, sumptuous, dreamy, uber-girly piece at the window. And I knew I had to paint a young ballerina getting ready, tying her shoes, in an imagined rose garden.
